FBS FredRank and Bowl Projections: 2019 Week 12

This week’s ratings come with an unfortunate revelation: the SEC could be getting four teams in the New Year’s Six once again. What’s so bad about that?

The main problem I have is the imbalance it would create. With LSU, Georgia, Alabama and Florida in those premier bowls, the next best team would be 8-4 Auburn. They would be pitted against a 10-2 Penn State in the Citrus Bowl, which takes the top Big Ten and SEC teams not in the NY6.

The top SEC teams are all the favorites in their projected bowls, but the next five are not—some by large margins. I try to strike a balance between creating close matchups and working with what the committee is giving us in their rankings.

What would be the best solution for this? Hopefully, a top team from another conference hangs in there and stays on top of at least on of the top four SEC teams (probably Florida) in order to take a bid to the Orange or Cotton Bowl. The Big Ten’s top teams in particular are very strong—they just need to avoid playing themselves out of a third NY6 game.
