FBS FredRank and Bowl Projections: 2019 Week 6

Pythagorean win percentage is back in FredRank! Rather than waiting for Warren Nolan to publish his (since I don't know if he'll even be doing that this year), I just found the way to calculate it on my own. The best part of this is that it will update in real time as I update scores, meaning it's one fewer thing I need to count on someone else to do.

Counting on other people is what got me here, updating the blog on a Thursday night when there was a game the night before. Maybe it's good business for Football Outsiders to wait this long to update F/+. Maybe they're just as lazy as I am, sometimes. I really don't know.

Anyway, on to the ratings!

Ohio State is on top in both ratings! But will that last? I don't think so—I think Alabama will come back to reclaim that spot, as long as they don't lose and even if OSU remains undefeated. Both teams have somewhat backloaded schedules—something you'd probably expect from two power conference teams—but Alabama's is a little more so. As long as they remain undefeated, as I have them doing until the national championship, they should stay neck-and-neck for those top two spots.

And speaking of undefeated, Boise State! Now one of the six teams I have with 13 wins through as many games. I still believe Utah State is the biggest threat to that, but after that team's thrashing at the hands of LSU, I think the Broncos have more of an edge now than the Aggies do.

What of Memphis, who could also start 13-0? They're ranked now, yes, but that won't be quite enough to earn a New Years Six bid. One Group of Five team will earn an automatic bid by being the highest-ranked team at bowl selection time. Any other G5 team who wants an at-large bid would have to be in the top 12 or so—and that means there would likely need to be two of them.

Since I don't see them making it there, partly because of this year's specific conference bids to NY6 games, Memphis' consolation is a bid to the Liberty Bowl game—a virtual home game for the Tigers.

My favorite matchups come in the Pinstripe, Texas, Music City, Orange and Citrus Bowls.
