November 16, 2018: FCS Bracketology

Using FCS FredRank, I've mocked up a bracket with the field of 24 playoff participants. Also included are the MEAC and SWAC champions in the Celebration Bowl, and the 8 best teams I believe will fall short of making the playoff.

The process begins with seeding the top 8 teams. The next 16 are matched up with each other and with a seeded team based on proximity; it doesn't matter who's the 9th best or 24th best once we get down past the top 8.

In the first two rounds, home teams are listed on top. After this, the better-seeded team is always made the home team.

Takeaways

-We get some really wonky matchups in the first round, partly due to the selection of seeded teams. Top 8 contains 2 MVFC teams (none in the next 16) and 3 Big Sky teams (2 in the next 16). Maybe some upsets in this last week of the regular season (for most FCS teams) will help clarify.

-Normally, teams from the same conference aren't matched up in the first round. The exception is with teams who did not play in the regular season—thus the Maine-Delaware game to decide who plays JMU.
