Freddy's XFL Ratings: 2020 Week 4

I want to make something clear about my ratings before I get into this week’s edition: the system I’m operating is highly experimental. Starting this year, for my ratings in the XFL and beyond (i.e. in the CFL and NFL), I’ve begun to use a method that weights the games more heavily as the season progresses. Week 1 games have some meaning, but not as much as Week 2, and certainly not as much as Week 10 and up. This is the first season of football where I’ve decided to update the blog on a weekly basis, albeit first waiting for three weeks of play to pass by. I’ll tweak it in the offseason if I need to. I’m not going to change my system in the middle of a football season just because it’s giving us results that don’t immediately make sense. For this week, I’ve allowed my computer to select the home-field advantage, rather than using an arbitrary value of my choosing. Throwback Thursday: The United States Football League, 1983

While the WFL failed in the 1970s, the United States Football League was being set up to succeed as early as 1965. That's when David Dixon, a New Orleans businessman who brought the Saints and the Superdome to his city, developed what is now called the "Dixon Plan." The plan was for a spring-summer football league with teams in top TV markets, playing in NFL-caliber stadiums. The league would also have a national TV contract and owners who would promise to limit their spending. Like the WFL, the league began play with 12 teams in three divisions. Their first season began in March 1983. The new league succeeded in more than a few ways. Attendance was roughly 25,000 on average, with the Gold and the Bandits leading the way. Welcome to the first edition of my XFL computer ratings for 2020! Once upon a time, I told myself I wouldn’t be doing this. The AAF left me thinking I wouldn’t be able to love a new upstart football league. But here we are, with a fresh set of ratings after three weeks of action. It might seem incredible that there’s such a big gap between the top 4 and bottom 4 teams in the league, but that’s par for the course in any league when we’re this early into the season. As more games are played and more error is introduced into the model—i.e. as game results start to deviate more and more from expectations—that gap should narrow and we should have a few teams in the range of -5 to 5, while we have one team currently in there, and only barely.
