We've come to the end of another CFL season, my first that I've covered on this blog. Congratulations to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on a Grey Cup win, finally!
However, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats end the season on top of my ratings. Let me explain why.
Not too long ago, perhaps on a few occasions, I'd mentioned that my ratings are not weighted toward recent results. That means each game matters equally in contributing to the teams involved. It means the Grey Cup's importance is understated. It means that, most of the time, a record of 16-4 is going to come out on top of a 14-7 record.
And in the future, I'll be changing that.
When the 2020 season comes, each game's impact will be weighted according to the week it happens in. Week 1 games will matter some, but not as much as Week 10 games, which won't matter as much as Week 21 games.
If a team heads into the playoffs facing a large gap between their rating and the frontrunner's, it will still take an extraordinary performance to take over that top spot by the end. But an impressive showing by Winnipeg—who won two away games before taking down the Tiger-Cats in stunning fashion, all as an underdog—showed me how so much could be rewarded so little with a flawed system in place.
I've enjoyed getting to know more about the CFL throughout this year and I look forward to continuing to learn with experience. I hope you've enjoyed my ratings and that you're excited for the changes that are coming next year!
